Alfred & Constance: Between two 19th-century Queenslanders

The project explored many possibilities, treating the site as a ‘gastro pub’ themed entertainment precinct highlighting different areas of the multi-faceted venue. The client insisted on a highly visual, rich interior, with the design conceived more as a theatre play than a traditional design process, basically staging the venue. By creating the stage, the intention was to highlight “the actors” (the customers). A very playful approach to night venue design, and highly curated through the aesthetic, flow and practicality of the site.

Ninety-five percent of the venue was designed sourcing second hand and vintage goods, with the objective to create an immediate welcoming and homely feel. The historic homes which make up Alfred & Constance keep the architectural vernacular which is recognisably Queensland.

Derlot won the Australia & Pacific Bar Design Award category for Alfred & Constance in the UK and International Restaurant and Bar Design Awards 2013.
